Smart Shopping for Puppy Insurance

When shopping for puppy insurance, you will want to consider the costs versus available coverage to determine which plan is right for your pet. Compare companies and the plans they offer to choose the one that is most cost effective for you.

Standard Coverage Areas

Most plans have dog accident coverage such as being hit by a car. Illnesses not related to cancer and surgeries that are required as a result an accident or illness are also covered. If hospitalization and prescriptions result, the coverage is typically 80 to 90% of the cost.

Preventative Care Coverage Areas

Vaccinations for puppies are essential and can be costly. Plans that include coverage for preventative care can be beneficial especially in the first year. Heart worm and flea control coverage are also desirable since infestations of either can lead to significant costs for treatment.

Supplemental Coverage Areas

Cancer is covered under a special supplemental policy and usually must be in effect for twelve months before the policy can be used. This may not be something you want to have when you pet is a puppy but may want to add as your dog ages. Other supplemental policies include dog dental care and spay or neuter coverage. If you plan to have your puppy spayed or neutered, having the supplemental policy to cover this procedure may be a good idea.
