Did You Know...
59% of those surveyed say pets are good for their health and the health of their family and help them relax. 40% say that owning a dog motivates them to exercise on a regular basis. Three-quarters of dog owners consider their dog like a child or family member and more than half of cat owners say the same (NPOS). From APPMA

The Essential Dog Skin Supplement Guide

Administering a dog skin supplement to your dog is the best way to ensure a shiny coat and healthy skin. The fatty acids inside of these supplements will benefit your dog's skin in a number of ways. All dogs can benefit from the right dog skin supplement. In addition, dogs that have itchy skin will benefit from the addition of the proper supplement.

The Importance of Fatty Acids
All dog skin supplements contain an abundance of fatty acids. These acids are made up of polyunsaturated fats such as Omega-3s and Omega-6s. While many animals (including dogs) can product a number of fatty acids on their own, they cannot produce "essential" fatty acids.

Essential fatty acids must be gained through proper diet. This is why giving your dog a dog skin supplement is essential. Dogs that are overweight may need additional fatty acids due to the fact that "diet" dog food does not contain a large amount of fat.

Dog Food That Contains Fatty Acids
Many large dog food companies have picked up on the fact that dogs need to have essential fatty acids. This is why many dog food brands are now advertising "increased Omega-3s!" or "a large portion of Omega-6!"

However, the fatty acid that is inside of dog food is not enough. In order for essential fatty acids to become useful, they must be proportioned properly. While pet food companies may add some extra fatty acids, your dog still needs a dog skin supplement to improve skin health.

Omega-6 and Omega-3
Look for a dog skin supplement that contains both essential fatty acids. Check supplement ingredient lists for the following Omega-6 and Omega-3 acids.

Omega-6

  • Linoleic acid
  • Arachidonic acid
  • Gamma linolenic acid
  • Dihomogamma linolenic acid

Omega-3

  • Alpha linolenic acid
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid
  • Docosahexaenoic acid

Most recommended brands of dog skin supplements will contain an abundance of the Omega-6 and Omega-3 acids listed above. In addition, look for supplements that also contain Vitamins A and Vitamin E -- two vitamins that are important for healthy skin.

Recommended Dog Skin Supplements
While there are lots of dog skin supplements on the market, the following supplements come highly recommended by dog care professionals.

  • Nordic Naturals Omega-3
  • Evsco Select Full Spectrum Antioxidant
  • Drs Foster and Smith

Dogs that have been itching prior to receiving supplements should stop itching approximately three days after a dog supplement has been administered. All dogs should have a noticeably healthier coat within one week of administering a dog skin supplement.
