Did You Know...
59% of those surveyed say pets are good for their health and the health of their family and help them relax. 40% say that owning a dog motivates them to exercise on a regular basis. Three-quarters of dog owners consider their dog like a child or family member and more than half of cat owners say the same (NPOS). From APPMA

Senior Dog Vitamins To Encourage Graceful Aging

Aging dogs have additional nutritional requirements. Since senior dogs often suffer from arthritis and other complications, senior dog vitamins are recommended. During your dog's senior years, it is important to provide a well balanced diet.

Vitamin/Mineral Mix
If your senior dog is not receiving adequate nutrients from an everyday diet, then a vitamin and mineral mix is necessary. Often older dogs are not able to absorb all of the nutrients that a daily diet provides, and in this case a vitamin and nutrient mix is vital.

When to Start a Vitamin Routine
Veterinarians recommend that all dogs take a multivitamin on a daily basis. However, older dogs need to have additional vitamin and nutrients. Dogs are considered to be "senior" at the age of seven years old. It is best to begin a elderly dog vitamin routine at this time.

Types of Vitamins to Consider
Look for a multivitamin that contains all of the following vitamins.

  • Vitamin A will help your dog's skin to remain supple and youthful.
  • Vitamin D helps to promote healthy bones and teeth.
  • Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant
  • Vitamin K helps when it comes to blood clotting.

Other Vitamins
Aside from specialty senior dog vitamins, some studies suggest that older dogs may benefit from additional supplements. Supplements such as A, E, and C may help your dog to age gracefully, since they provide extra nutritional support.
